CANCUN 2000

This postcard almost shows The Casa Maya, where we stayed. It's off to the right in this picture. Check out their web site. It's the only one I have found with live webcams. I can recommend this hotel. It is not fancy, but after paying for the Hyatt and other more expensive hotels, the only thing I missed were the swim-up bars. But the store in the lobby, beach bar service and other things made it a nice place to stay. They have timeshares there and we worried we'd get the sales pitch. We did not. I almost wish we did. I might like to get a cheap unit there for life.

Here we are at the beach bar. That would have been out first stop, but we got there a bit early and they weren't quite open. So we waited. Then we got our first fruity drinks!

Here's Xie at the Coco Loco beach bar at Casa Maya. For the hotel guests, they have amigos who walk around the beach and take drink orders. We enjoyed a number of buckets of beer later on.

Here's Xie later, tree hugging.

This is a shot of the beach at Casa Maya. Look at all those people baking their flesh!

This is also from the hotel beach. The lighter area up front was very shallow water. It dropped off quickly past the buoys. Still we saw a lot of fish swimming in the beach area. We snorkeled a bit there and were amazed to see all the fish swimming around everyone's feet and occasional schools of fish come through.

Ay! Here are Los Desperados at Pericos. Look at the size of those Margaritas! Man, I hate to think how many people's noses that moustache had been stuck up. No warning. She just stuck it up my nose!

Here I am in color.

This is the scene going up to the bathroom at Pericos.

And in the bathroom, a long dead guy on the toilet...

An odd looking picture. The ceiling slants, so it looks strange here.

Ay, that's a good Margarita!

Jhonny Boy! Little Man From Another Place.

Xie loved Johnny Boy!

We were so glad to get to swing to The Girl from Ipanema at Pericos.

Some building in downtown Cancun.

Ah, Snorkel Adventure! A vacation on your vacation. This was my second trip to Snorkel Adventure. It is by far the best thing I have done in Cancun. You take a bus ride to a private beach. On the beach they have many palapas and hammocks. There is a cooler with all the beer you want (Corona, Dos X, Victoria). You go out for 2 45 minute snorkeling sessions. You return for a wonderful lunch and more beer and shooters. Some beach volleyball. They play very nice music. Now loud annoying stuff. Then you back out for another 45 minute snorkel and back to your hotel. It is so relaxing! And the snorkeling is great. Philippe and John are super. Just a great time. But be warned. There is another excursion called Snorkel Adventure. It is at Porte Morelles. It is not nearly so good. I made that mistake.

The hammocks and palapas.

The beach there.

All the Victoria beer you could drink and free coconuts!

Ah, the good life.

It was another great trip to Cancun. My 4th. Once again the weather was great. No rain to speak of and warm and sunny. The people are nice. They can be pretty rude in the markets. But mostly it is wonderful. I go twice a year usually. Email me if you have questions or need advice.

May 2000

My best friend Justin and I went to Cancun in May 2000 at the time of my birthday. It was his first time there. He is scuba certified, and it was his first time to dive in the ocean. He loved it. He paid $55 US for a two tank dive, and they video taped the dive for him for free.

I'm looking for...

This is the view from the balcony of our room at the Hyatt.

This is the ocean side at the Hyatt. There is no beach at the hotel, but it's a short walk to the beach next door.

Here's Justin at the Hyatt shore. You can see the beach in the background.

This is at the Hyatt as well.

Here I am, drink in hand on the bridge myself.

Here I am soaking up the ... beer! The pool was great. It had an upper level with a waterfall down to this level which you see. There was a swim up bar and lounge chairs in the pool.

Another view of the Hyatt.

This platform was at the hotel for sun bathers.

Across from the hotel.

Here we are at the other Snorkel Adventure. The not-so-hot one.

On the way to the reef.

A sea cucumber.

Isla Mujeres

Marina.

North beach. A more natural beach, and a few girls au naturale. This is also a less rough surf as the island protects this side.

The beach on the other side of the island.

A restaurant there.

The cemetary on Isla Muheres.

In the tops of the graves they had these cabinets. Often there is an electric light as in this one, and many figurines. I am not sure why.

A pirate's grave?

A litte park downtown.

A nice shopping center. Check out Sanbornes for eats.
